Eve-NG installation for CCNP. Bare Metal or Vmware Workstation

Post by genivcom » Sat Jan 26, 2019 6:44 pm

Hello, I use some simple program to simulate cisco a while back to get my CCNA want to get back to cisco and go for my CCNP. Someone showed me Eve-NG and it seems light years ahead of GNS3.

I want to install it but don't know which is better VMWare workstation or Bare Metal. Can someone give provide recommendation on these factor.
These are my two option install

VMWARE Workstation 14 machine specs (its a lenovo thinkpad w520 from 2012)
This is my training machine, it has GNS3 and a few other VM running on it. but usually one VM running at a time
But GNS3 may be running all the time. (though nothing "intensive")
- Host OS is Windows 7 x64 ultimate
- Intel i7-2760QM cpu (quad core)
- 32gb ram DDR3
- 480gb SSD dedicated to itself (secondard HDD)
- this has GNS3 VM installed on it also

Bare Metal
This is will be dedicated hardware for EVE-NG
- Lenovo M92p mini desktop
- Intel i5-3470 (dual core)
- 16gb ram DDR3
- 480gb SSD

For CCNA to CCNP level stuff what do you guys recommend. EVE-NG installed on VMWARE Workstation 14 or BareMetal?
Will it make much difference in performance?

I really want to install in the VMware workstation machine as all my learning stuff is on that machine and it is on most of the time anyway.
With Bare Metal I would have to turn on and dedicate that machine for one purpose only. I it worth it in performance to go bare metal?

Thanks for your help

Bare is obviously better.
But not on laptop, or at least make sure if your laptop has ethernet NIC.
If you would have same HW tech specification, ten comparision VM ware vs HW would be visible even.
Here you have mid level latop decicated for bare. your i5 has 4 cores btw.
https://ark.intel.com/products/68316/In ... -3-60-GHz-

Iam sure that for CCNA/CCNP RS studies will be enough then, but check ethernet NIC on it.
Such box eazy will run IOL, vIOS.

VM machine as well will do the job.
VM Settings would be CPU 4/1 with 16 or 24G RAM then.

Comparision bare i5 and your i1 as VM ware will give you approximately same result.

what do you mean by "CPU 4/1"?

I'm not running for CCNP, im studying for CCIE SP, but I have to balance with my work, and i have to run a lot of leaf and spines and bgp, vxlan... what i did to conciliate was to get a tough baremetal at velia.net and install esxi and eve... im not concerned anymore about memory or anything, just doing my things.

of course... theres a cost of 100 euros, but it worth for me....

hope that helps.
