EVE-NG on threadripper

Post by mvanoverbeek » Thu Jan 24, 2019 1:41 am

I just bought a RYZEN THREADRIPPER 12 Core which I first thought I would use with VIRL, the tool drove me absolutely NUTS. I read EVE-NG is not supported but I can tell you it works like a charm! Everything works fine. I only have one quirk with a NXOSv. It keeps loosing its configuration every time I reboot eve. I don't think that has anything to do with the CPU though.

It is not EVE nor your CPU issue.
It is NXOSk problem.
But there is orkarround.
Check another your post where I gave answer.

Question, EVE is installed as VM machine or bare EVE install?

Hello. I too have a TR version 1950x and it works great with eve pro. I am using workstation pro and can only use up to 16 cores. No issues thus far.

It is installed in VMWARE PRO on a WIndows 10 machine

Would someone mind linking to the workaround referenced? Considering buying a 2950X, but want to see how much of a hassle it is to use with EVE.

Read EVE cookbook Section 10.
Until you need this switch to connect it to EVE virtual SW over trunk as extender for real devices, I dont see big issues for that 2960X

Hi mvanoverbeek
Which ryzen did you buy, and what kind of issue did you experience with VIRL ?
Ryzen is officially supported by Virl I think, per the below:
https://learningnetworkstore.cisco.com/virlfaq/hardware
Non-Hypervisor Installations (Bare-metal)
Verify that your machine meets the following minimum hardware requirements:
• Four CPU cores and 8GB of DRAM – more resources allows for larger simulations
• Intel VT-x / EPT or AMD-V / RVI virtualization extensions present and enabled in the BIOS

Hi All,

I am not sure, if there is any discussion done in past about this issue.
But really want to know if I am investing/walking on the right path.

Did a math and come-up with a specification framework:

Motherboard : MSI x399 Creation
Processor : Ryzen Threadripper 2950x (this is 2nd Gen)
RAM : corsair vengeance 16GB (3000 MHz) [64 GB to start off with]
GPU : Nvidia GeForce GT 730 (4GB )
SMPS : 1000Watt from Cooler master
CPU liquid Cooler : MasterLiquid ML240 RGB TR4 Edition

Requesting all to look into this spec and suggest.

Thanks in advance.

Your Power Supply is to big for this setup. It do not work efficient.

My 3950x with 128 GB RAM have a 450 Watt power-supply.
