How to choose Server or PC for EVE, what CPU?

Before posting something, READ the changelog, WATCH the videos, howto and provide following:
Your install is: Bare metal, ESXi, what CPU model, RAM, HD, what EVE version you have, output of the uname -a and any other info that might help us faster.

Hi,
currently i am running EVE-NG in GCP.
However since i am using it more often i am considering to buy a server.
Among all the different hardware to choose i was wondering and heard that there is a limitation for Vsphere ESXI free to 8 vCPUs per VM.

This mean that I need to purchase a Vsphere license if i want to go beyond 8 vCPUs for EVE-NG VM ?

I heard these licenses are very expensive. Or are there discounts available for studying ?

If this is too expensive the way forward would be to install EV-NG directly to the server (bare-metal).

Did i understand this correct ? Many thanks for helping !!!

Kind Regards,
levian

Hi,
i googled but couldn't really find an answer.
I guess i will go for ESXI and maybe reset my eval license every 60 days ?
a couple thousand Euro for a VMWare license is way to much for a home lab.
O i will go for Bare-Metal. I will see then.

Currently i am looked up a server with following specs:

HP Server ProLiant DL380 Gen9 2x 10C Xeon E5-2650 v3 2,3GHz 128GB 4xLFF - price = 783,00 €

Technical specifications Processor Intel Xeon
Processor type Xeon E5-2650 v3
Number of CPUs 2
Number of CPU sockets 2
Processor clock (MHz) 2300
Processor Cache (MB) 25
Number of cores per CPU 10
Memory (GB) 128
Memory type DDR4 RAM
Hard disk type SATA LFF
Hot-plug yes
Graphics card onboard yes
Number of power supplies 2
max. number of power supplies 2
Construction type rack

Hard disks
total capacity (GB) 0
max. hard disks 4

PCI devices onboard
Device_1 Gigabit Ethernet 331i (NetXtreme BCM5719)
Device_2 Smart Array B140i SATA RAID controller
Device_4 Integrated Lights-Out Standard Management (iLO)

Expansion slots
PCIe x8 4
PCIe x16 2

Connectors
VGA 1
Gigabit Ethernet, RJ-45 4
Management 1
USB 3.0 5

################################################################################

and 2 times SATA-SSD (RAID1)

HP SATA-SSD 1,6TB SATA 6G LFF Apollo - 847034-001 846788-B21 total price= 1.076,00 €

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
Capacity in GB 1600
Interface SATA 6G
Connector SATA (7 pin)
Data transfer rate 600 MBps
Hot-plug frame yes
Frame type 3.5
Frame type HP SAS/SATA 3.5" LFF Apollo

This would be a total of 1.859,00 €
Do you think this would be decent server runnning most of the labs (Nexus, SD-WAN, SD-Access, etc..) ?

Many Thanks again !!!

Kind Regards,
levian

I'm running an HPE Proliant G8 DL380P
i420p with 2GB Flash Backed Controller
RAID5 SSD with Crucial BX 480GB for a total of 1.4TB
168GB of DDR 3 ECC RAM
2X E5-2680v2 (20C/40T)
Eve-NG Pro Bare Metal

I purchased the server for $235 USD with 48GB RAM and 900GB spinner HDD.
I added 8GB ECC DDR 3 dimms for $12 per
Added 3 more drive trays for $12 per

I believe all in I ended up at slightly less than $800 and I've done some decent sized designs (12 switch, 2 router, radius, active directory) and it's been well performing to say the least.

I have watched the installation video, after apt-get update and apt-get upgrade were successful.

Hello,
may i ask for an opinion...how big performance difference is going for some server, dual xeon v3 with DDR3 versus dual xeon v4 with DDR4? Is v4 with DDR4 worth to spend much more extra money? What about low power xeons? I have opportunity to buy R630 with 2x 10-Core E5-2630Lv4, could this handle most of the labs?
As we read, we know CPU is heart...but...its more important amount of cores/threads with smaller frequency or less cores with higher frequency?

Thank you.

Use our EVE resource calculator to check your lab needs vs CPU and resource:

Uldis
Will be great add column to CALC with HDD space required by each node.
