Ubuntu Node VNC stuck at 800x600

I'm curious on how to change the desktop resolution of my Ubuntu guest from 800x600. 800x600 is the only option available. I have tried some variations using xrandr but I get errors like;

xrandr -s 1024x768:

Size 1024x768 not found in available nodes

xrandr --newmode ....

Failed to get size of gamma for output default

Any help on how I might change the resolution would be helpful as the VM isn't really usable at 800x600
