Looking for Hardware advice

Post by NT0912 » Sat Aug 22, 2020 4:37 pm

Hi all,

My Name is NT and i`m a network engineer from Germany.
I'm currently looking into building myself a new PC to be used with Cisco CML and Eve-NG. I thought about three options and wanted to ask for the community's advice and help in choosing the right one.

Usecase:
Primary:
  • Labing Cisco CCNP Enterprise and CCIE Enterprise
  • EVE-NG
  • CML
  • Coding Python
  • Network Automation
  • Jupyther Notebooks
Secondary:
  • Gaming (Battlefield and Anno)
  • starting again xD
Current Setup:
  • Thinkpad P50
  • i7-6700HQ
  • 32GB RAM (could go up to 64GB)
New Setups
Option1:
  • Buying a used Server + not so beefy PC for gaming
  • I would have to buy a Towerserver because of space problems and noise (wife would kill me xD)
  • Servers are quiet expensive in Europe as far as I know
Option2: Option3: Does anyone have experience with i9 and AMD builds and do Eve-NG and CML run on them or are there any problems beside the Xrv9000?

Thank you very much for your help and guidance

Best regards
NT

Hi Uldis,

thank you very much for your advice! While I use eve-ng on gcp at the moment this gets quiet pricy after I used my 300€ free credits... So I checked the recommended thread and I was looking into our local used server market. To be honest I'm a bit confused :D I checked reddit and other forums for tipps/hints and many people are talking about dell and hp server for homelabs.
I personally was not able to find a dell or hp under 1000€ there I life with at least relatively recent hardware (was looking for the suggested xeon v3/v4 cpus).

But i did find some nice supermicro offers and wanted to ask if anyone has experience with supermicro devices and if the prices are reasonable:

Server 1:
SUPERMICRO SERVER CSE-819U 2X 12C XEON E5-2690 V3 2,6GHZ 64GB - 1130€

Server 2:
SUPERMICRO SERVER CSE-819U 2X 6C XEON E5-2620 V3 2,4GHZ 64GB - 570€ (are 2 times 6 core enough for bigger labs like Cisco SD-WAN and CCIE)

Server 3: (personal favorite)
SUPERMICRO SERVER CSE-819U 2X 10C XEON E5-2650 V3 2,3GHZ 64GB - 685€

All the servers should run ESXi 7 as far as I see and will have plenty of RAM Slots to upgrade over time.

I'm thankful for any help since I do not have many experience with servers and it also will be a learning of server stuff for me with the lab.

best regards
