Older XEONs CPU for EVE-NG Labbing?

Post by martek » Sat May 23, 2020 5:59 am

how about getting older and used Xeon CPUs for SD-WAN labbing and possible other labs? How old is too old?

you can Custom Build HP Workstation Z620 and Z800 on Ebay via http://www.ebaystores.com/PC-Servers-an ... 581&_pgn=2

HP Z800 workstation support 2x Xeons CPUs mostly 4-, 6-cores and up to 192GB RAM. CPU supported are Intel Xeon X5500 from 2009-2011 and 2nd Generation Intel Xeon X5600 from 2011-2013.

HP Z620 support also 2 CPUs and 192 GB RAM. CPUs are newer Xeons with 4-,6-,8-, even 10-cores. Range are from E5-1603 to E5-2643, and E5-1607 v2, E5-2643 v2 to E5-26497v2.

Couple of Benefits of getting used stuff is low prices for those used CPUs and RAM. Adding 2nd CPU should be no problem.
I am looking up to $450-500 price range.
Any thoughts and suggestions

Dont touch stations with X5500!

min from OLD series are X5680 or E5-26XXv2 series then
again, RAM is myth.

Thanks Uldis,
you were specific regarding numbers X5680 or E5-26XXv2 series; Why not X5650 or x5675 or not E5-26XX v1 series?
Only difference between X5650, x5675 and X5680 is processor speed in GHz. i.e speeds for X5675 is 3.06GHz and for X5680 has 3.33GHz; Aren't they close enough?

not sure what is difference between E5-26XX v1 and v2 ; chart is at https://zworkstations.com/site/assets/f ... asheet.pdf

I said..
No 5500 series at all, forget it (XX means last two digits)

and minimum from 5600 series is 5680 and up, not below, mate

same for E5-26XX, XX means 2650, 26680, 2690
v2 and not v1
